Nano Banana 2 is Google's latest AI image generation model, built on the Gemini Flash architecture and released globally on February 26, 2026. It is now the default model across the Gemini app in Fast, Thinking, and Pro modes.

The original Nano Banana model launched in August 2025 and attracted 13 million new users in its first four days, generating over 5 billion images within weeks. The Pro version followed that November with stronger quality but slower output. Every image Nano Banana 2 generates is invisibly watermarked using Google's SynthID technology and tagged with C2PA content credentials, a standard developed with partners including Adobe, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Meta. The real-time web search is excellent for factual accuracy, but it also means the model can surface copyrighted or trademarked material if prompted carelessly. Prompt clearly, use reference wisely, and apply the same creative ethics you would with any tool that accesses live information.

While 4K output is available, it works best on images that were composed with that resolution in mind from the start. Upscaling a poorly-prompted image to 4K just gives you a large poor image. Start with a strong prompt.

The thinking level feature is worth experimenting with before committing to a workflow. Dynamic mode takes longer. The quality gain is real, but it may not justify the wait on every project. Match the thinking level to the complexity of the prompt.
